Iranians enjoy Armenian typography / Lusine Tsaturyan
Interview with NorDar Magazine, about Armenian alphabet and typography, based on my Armenian posters

Full interview with pictures of posters in Russian

First of all tell me please about yourself. Who are you? What do you do in your life? What is your hobby?

Hmm, I’m a graphic designer from Rasht, Iran. 26, I do design fonts and typefaces, too. Now i’m a freelance designer. Graphic design and stuff. My biggest hobby is this: Internet. I think i can’t live without it!

As I see you also design Armenian fonts, don’t you? Why exactly Armenian? And tell me, please, how it happened that you decided to become a graphic designer?

No, not Armenian “fonts”, this was a call for entry from a publication in Iran for glorifying Armenian Graphic Designers in develop Iranian graphic design. Long story, but I should mention it, i guess. The first Armenian printing house in Persia was established in New Julfa (Isfahan, Iran) in 1636. The first book to be published in this printing house was «Սաղմոսարան» (“Saghmosaran”, “Psalter”); it was published in 1638 by Khachatur Kesaratsi,[4] while the first Persian book in Persia was published 192 years later in 1830. WIKIPEDIA. So after that they were all over the country, first cinema posters in Iran by Moushegh and Napoleon Sarvari, Fredrik Talburg,… Because of these efforts, that publication started a call for an entry to design posters design by Armenian type with “GRAPHIC” word. Armenian Typography for we, Iranian designers was great. I mean, we have a lot of Armenians in Iran especially in Isfahan but we never looked into their alphabet and try to create a typography work with it.
And second question, actually i was drawing cartoons in 15 i used to draw cartoons of other cartoonists sometimes better than then  and after that having a computer and my interest in colors, slowly brought me to graphic design, and the first big hint was that my first serious poster was accepted in Tehran Contemporary Museum of Arts for a festival.

Do you like Armenian alphabet? Is there something that connects you with Armenia? Who you cooperate with and who you are inspired of?

Actually, yes, it is left to right and creative I think. Letters are similar to Latin and Cyrillic (i think) but they have a whole new identity. And i should admit that i didn’t know that ONE person invented it, this is pretty HUGE. Mesrop Mashtots that i saw a statue of him in Vank Cathedral in Isfahan, Iran.  For me he is like Ferdowsi (Great Iranian Poet) that re-lived Persian language with his poems all in Persian. Not something specific, but when i was a child, there was an Armenian woman living in my father’s aunt neighborhood. I liked her and she was some kinda different to me. But it is all blurry right now. I’m a lonely fox  i don’t cooperate much but for inspiration i should say: Ferdowsi, Khayyam, Bahram Beyzaei, Marlon Brando, Jule Verne, Al Pacino, Bill Maher,…

Do you have more works like this? And what do you express by your works? What do you feel while making them?

What do you mean by LIKE this? Armenian? Did you see all works in that link, right? There are 5 posters there, i think.  If you did, so no there isn’t any other designs by Armenian Letters. What am i express? In these works? In this special event, i wanted to DO design with these new letters and make a typographic work with the word that was given to us. I was so excited about the fact that a whole alphabet was created by one person. I feel release! contempt. When some work is NEW and INTERESTING for me, i enjoy it. If i don’t design the ideas i feel something is missing. That’s why i still like these works.

Ok. Thats all. Thank you SO MUCH for your answers! When we publish your interview. I’ll let you know. Thanks again. It was so nice to talk to you.

You’re absolutely welcome  And THANK YOU.  I hope you do me a favor and correct my bad grammar. And when it will publish i’d like to know, because it was a pleasure. nice to “meet” you here and talk.
